GARDNER — A 60-year-old man was cited Tuesday morning after he drove onto a sidewalk, hitting and killing a dog being walked by its owner.

The medium-sized dog died at the scene after being hit, police said. Its owner was checked over by emergency personnel at the scene.

The incident happened at about 8:30 a.m. at Elm and Bond streets, Sgt. James Trifiro said. The vehicle went onto the sidewalk where the dog was on a leash with its owner, and struck the pet.

The driver was charged with a marked lanes violation.

The area where the dog was hit is not far from the spot where a woman out for an afternoon walk on the sidewalk along Elm Street was hit and killed in December 2010. The 45-year-old mother of three was struck by a driver who also hit a utility pole before his car rolled over and who told police he'd fallen asleep at the wheel.
