WORCESTER - Friendly House director Gordon Hargrove was announced Wednesday as the winner of the Greater Worcester Community Foundation's Renaissance Award.

The foundation made the announcement during its annual meeting at Mechanics Hall. The foundation cited Mr. Hargrove's tireless commitment to serving the Worcester community, along with his leadership with the organization he started volunteering with in 1957, in naming him the recipient of the 14th annual Renaissance Award.

With an operating budget of more than $4.8 million, Friendly House gives comprehensive coordinated neighborhood basic services to inner-city families in Worcester.

The Renaissance Award is a $5,000 cash prize awarded annually by the foundation to recognize "exceptional talent and dedication of those who lead nonprofits" in the area.

Also at the annual meeting, Kola Akindele, Matilde Castiel, and Maria Heskes-Allard were elected to the foundation's board.
