GARDNER - Police are warning the public to be vigilant after two young girls said a man in a white van approached them around 7 p.m. Tuesday, offering them candy and asking them to get into a vehicle.
The girls ran away, police said.
A similar incident was reported in Hubbardston, police said.
In the Hubbardston case, the man was described as having dirty gray hair, or it may have been dyed. He was wearing a hat and sunglasses, and he was driving a full-sized white van with tinted back windows, according to police.
The man appeared to be videotaping or photographing the children, Hubbardston police said.
Witnesses in Gardner said the man was blond.
Hubbardston police Sgt. Ryan Couture said there were some incidents in town where a man was reported to have made statements that caused some people to be uncomfortable. There were reports Monday and Tuesday, he said, adding that the complaints came from the area near the Comet Pond boat ramp.
One of those involved a man in a black car with "Einstein" style hair, police said. That man spoke to a 14-year-old girl who was out running around 8 a.m. Wednesday. He was asking where she lived, police said.
Police in both towns are asking residents to be alert and to report anything suspicious, including anything that may be related to these incidents.
