So where is everybody?

This past November's election results were said to have ignited an intense interest in political involvement. It would seem this would be a year for a turnaround in candidate interest, as well as voter turnout, in local municipal elections - politics at the grassroots level where newcomers have their best shot at getting involved. Yet in Worcester, preliminary elections to whittle down the field are needed for only two district city council races where incumbents are not running. Plus one candidate is running unopposed. The Worcester School Committee has only one challenger for the six seats. Two mayoral races in northern Worcester County, Gardner and Leominster, have unopposed incumbents. If we're in the midst of a political renaissance, then where is everybody? And why?
